Islands

Shadow

Shadow kept his Communicator charged—Zephyr reminded him the night before. Teleporting between islands back and forth was possible, but such a thing ate up so much battery. It drove him nuts. It also meant no gaming for a while. Which was even worse.

Shortly after getting ready, Shadow knocked on the girls’ door.

Celia opened it. “Morning.” She always looked full of energy, even on twenty-hour shifts.

“How’s Skye doin’?”

“She’s better—unconscious right now. She’ll continue to be like that as I get to the next phase of the extraction process.” Shadow’s Medic exams went into detail about the scenarios for extracting elements from one’s aura points. For Skye, it would’ve taken longer because of her high number of aura points and reserves.

“Keep me updated?”

“Of course. Your leader already asked me to, but your primary focus should be your upcoming mission.”

Everyone else was at the dining hall by the time Shadow made it downstairs.

“It was weird… Almost like she wasn’t breathing,” said Aurora, stiffening as Shadow sat down next to her. “That was never mentioned to be a symptom in any of our medical texts.”

Spark speared a piece of pineapple from Aurora’s plate with a fork. “Haven’t seen anythin’ like aura points shutting, but it was terrifying! Celia told us not to worry, though.”

Zephyr took a sip of hariberry juice. “There’s a lot out there that we don’t know about.”

“If Celia’s telling us not to worry, she’ll be fine!” said Leif. “She’s one of the best Medics.”

“Leif’s got a point,” said Spark. There was a slight cut on her right cheek from their sparring match the night before.

Shadow put up a good fight but got overwhelmed by her lance-work in the end. Spark and Zephyr praised him for being able to go toe-to-toe as a protector facing up against a secondary powerhouse. Good enough for him, as there weren’t any other witnesses. Next time, he’d win.

After fueling up, they set out for the docks. Ice Tetra stood by S.S. KAI. It was the same size as the other ships and made of Azoth, with the signature dark blue coloring. “S.S. KAI” pleated with silver was painted across the front.

“Imagine steering these in battle!” said Leif, marveling.

“Wait till Stream and the others get back to working on Project ASTEROID and finishing it!” said Zephyr. “I’ll be like in the comic books!”

“Ya know it!” said Leif. The boys fist-bumped, leading Aurora to facepalm.

A staircase emerged from the vessel, unfolding itself and attaching to the dock. The party followed Ice Tetra up the stairs and onto the deck. They waved at the captain and helmsman, who left toward the bridge.

“We got the report about your sister,” said Dr. Caraway. “It’s a pity, but at least it’ll be taken care of and it’s better to do so now than later.”

“Are you excited about joining Miss Zedler?” asked another researcher. Shadow tried to remember her name, but it wasn’t coming up.

Zephyr smiled. “Of course. It’s been so long since I’ve seen her.”

Luna was to meet them at the capital, Scorpio, and this was the first time Shadow had ever been to an underwater city.
